MARITAL CRISIS can easily be defined as “any psychosocial aberration in the smooth running of a home or any prolonged emotional imbalance or socio-economic situation that introduces unusual distress in the love relationship between a couple that once lived in peace, health and happiness”.

Danmbaezue J. K.(22.05.2006 09:53:08HRS)

My definition of marriage, which can be found on pages 3 and 40 of my handbook; AM I QUALIFIED FOR MARRIAGE? (1995), forms the base for all diagnostic evaluations and management of the various crises that can attack the institution of marriage. Once a detailed case history has been established, the couple takes two or three psycho-diagnostic tests that will give the therapist a differential diagnosis on which to base his therapeutic regimen. I have developed at least seven such micro diagnostic tests; made up of scales, inventories and profiles; which can easily be extracted from my other small handbook; “FAMILY COUNSELLING, A PSYCHOMETRIC APPROACH”.

This one is a scientific manual that took over ten years to produce and I have written it specifically for this purpose. The upsurge of marital crises in Nigeria can only be equalled by the rate of the spread of HIV-AIDS pandemic worldwide! Why it is not give banner headlines in our newspapers or electronic news is because every culture has its ethnocentric methodology for handling its peculiar marital conflicts.
In Africa, wherever the Extended Family System still holds sway, blood relatives always arbitrate in marital crisis! When this is combined with its regularity of occurrence in every home, hamlet or village, no one raises eyebrows over the epidemic proportion it has assumed in the past decades. Anonymity and urbanisation have equally sent it to the back burners, so much that no sane man or woman loses a night sleep over it any more. This has given the epidemic a nonchalant acceptance as a normal event in every marriage and the rapidity with which it manifests in every home has made it a routine occurrence that does not cause anyone insomnia.
Can we continue to ignore its side effects on the proper upbringing of our children?

METHODS OF MANAGING MARITAL CRISES

1. INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOTHERAPY

Psychotherapy is the treatment of individuals with emotional problems, behavioural problems, or mental illness primarily through verbal communication. In most types of psychotherapy, a person discusses his or her problems one-on-one with a therapist. The therapist tries to understand the person’s problems and to help the individual change distressing thoughts, feelings or behaviours.

People often seek psychotherapy when they have tried other approaches to solving a personal problem. For example, people who are depressed, anxious, or have drug or alcohol problems may find that talking to friends or family members is not enough to resolve their problems. Sometimes people may want to talk to a therapist about problems they would feel uncomfortable discussing with friends or family, such as being sexually abused as a child. Finding a therapist to talk to who is knowledgeable about emotional problems, has patients’ best interests at heart, and is relatively objective can be extremely helpful.

Psychotherapy differs in two ways from the informal help or advice that one person may give another. First, psychotherapy is conducted by a trained, certified or licensed therapist. In addition, treatment methods in psychotherapy are guided by well-developed theories about the sources of personal problems.

At one time the term psychotherapy referred to a form of psychiatric treatment used with severely disturbed individuals, whereas counselling referred to the treatment of people with milder psychological problems or to advice given on vocational and educational matters. Today the distinction between psychotherapy and counselling is quite blurred, and many mental health professionals use the terms interchangeably. Psychotherapists and counsellors often treat the same kinds of problems and use the same set of techniques.

II. PROBLEMS TREATED WITH PSYCHOTHERAPY

Psychotherapy is an important form of treatment for many kinds of psychological problems. Two of the most common problems for which people seek help from a therapist are depression and persistent anxiety. People with depression may have low self-esteem, a sense of hopelessness about the future, and a lack of interest in people and activities once found pleasurable. People with anxiety disorders may feel anxious all the time or suffer from phobias, a fear of specific objects or situations. Psychotherapy, by itself or in combination with drug treatment, can often help people overcome or manage these problems. People experiencing an emotional crisis due to marital problems, family disputes, problems at work, loneliness, or troubled social relationships may benefit from psychotherapy. Other problems often treated with psychotherapy include obsessive-compulsive disorder, personality disorders, alcoholism and other forms of drug dependence, problems stemming from child abuse, and behavioural problems, such as eating disorders and juvenile delinquency.

III. TYPES OF THERAPY

There are more than 250 kinds of psychotherapy, but only a fraction of these have found mainstream acceptance. Psychotherapy encompasses a large number of treatment methods, each developed from different theories about the causes of psychological problems and mental illnesses. There are more than 250 kinds of psychotherapy, but only a fraction of these have found mainstream acceptance. Many kinds of psychotherapy are offshoots of well-known approaches or build upon the work of earlier theorists.

In individual therapy, a patient or client meets regularly with a therapist, typically over a period of weeks or months. The methods of therapists vary depending on their theory of personality, or way of understanding another individual. Most therapies can be classified as (1) psychodynamic, (2) humanistic, (3) behavioural, (4) cognitive, or (5) eclectic. In the United States, about 40 percent of therapists consider their approach eclectic, which means they combine techniques from a number of theoretical approaches and often tailor their treatment to the particular psychological problem of a client.

Forms of therapy that treat more than one person at a time include group therapy, family therapy, and couples therapy. These therapies may use techniques from any theoretical approach. Other forms of therapy specialize in treating children or adolescents with psychological problems. People seeking help for their problems most often select individual therapy over group therapy and other forms of therapy. People may prefer individual therapy because it allows the therapist to focus exclusively on their problems, without distractions from others. In addition, individuals may desire more privacy and confidentiality than is possible in a group setting. Sometimes people combine individual therapy and group therapy

THE AFRICANISED KENEZIAN THERAPY

In psychotherapy sessions, a psychologist listens to his/ her client during an individual session. Psychotherapy can be an effective treatment for marital disorders if and only if both partners are ready to be truthful and open up to each other. In Existential Family therapy, which this author practises, we try to help couples understand the differences between the sexes and therefore realise and appreciate that they should complement each other.

No one should be a mirror image of the other! Their tastes and preferences may necessarily differ; however, they must be mutually beneficial to their corporate existence and nurture to optimise their love relationships. This is easily achieved by showing them how to resolve their unconscious conflicts, identify areas for personality adjustment and other forms of social skills to correct their teenage and adolescent negative conceptions and/or correct previous abnormal behaviour traits that bring about their conflicts.

We have developed and standardised seven psychological tests that aid us in making accurate, objective and predictive diagnosis and prescriptions to facilitate optimum crisis intervention in distressed family constellations. This is the beauty of our unique method; the Kenezian Existential Therapy. It is tailored to meet the needs and aspirations of the untutored African. It does not ape western therapeutic paradigms. It is purely creative and utilitarian. Our success is measured by what many couples that have benefited from our clinic say about the cost-efficiency and therapeutic effectiveness of our indigenous modifications or regimens.

The therapeutic regimen is divided into individual hourly, family weekly or fortnightly group sessions. The convenience of both clients and the therapist are considered in the timetable that maps a gradual progress towards marital harmony once more! The ability to create an environment that promotes confidentiality of information divulged to the therapist, client-therapist rapport, expertise of the therapist consulted and the client-centred nature of therapeutic sessions determines the outcome of a well-tailored & beneficial family therapy. Remember that children are the future leaders in every community. Their peculiar needs must be included in the regimens!

They deserve a peaceful home where filial and fraternal love, co-operation and good morals are imbibed early in life. They are the greatest gifts from God, the Almighty Creator, to any married couple. Let us give them the best our parental human and natural resources can afford now.

THE ORIGINS OF KENEZ PSYCHOLOGICAL RESEARCH FOUNDATION
Abbreviated; KPRF is the engine room of the parent organization
Kenez International Humanitarian Organizations Linkage; KIHOL, was conceptualised as an answer to the dearth of indigenous psychological tests in the African continent. It is the brainchild of an ambitious undergraduate on the end of session vacation job in 1973/74 at the government-owned Neuro-psychiatric Hospital, Aba. During his leisure hours at the hospital, he read a scientific review of “Self Assessment of I. Q” in the Reader’s Digest, a popular magazine he found in the OPD Waiting Room. He was familiar with the British publication since his higher school years, 1966-1967, at Christ the King College, Onitsha. He had from then adopted it as a suitable academic companion. The fascinating puzzle evaluated his scores and placed him within the range of 120 plus or minus15.
He refuted the validity of the assessment tool noting its ethnocentric bias in both the cultural artefacts used in its construction and the peculiar anglicised phraseology used in its verbal and non-verbal test items. He went home determined to rectify the identified anomalies by modifying those areas he saw as skewed assessment items. He christened his indigenous revision; “A Cultural Adaptation of I.Q. Tests”.
This revolutionary impetus lasted another academic session as the young man asked so many questions on the issue and demanded veritable answers from his lecturers at the Department of Psychology, University of Lagos, Yaba, in Lagos, Nigeria. He eventually produced an Africanised version of that same “Self Assessment of I. Q” in the Reader’s Digest. One of his lecturers; Dr Delores E. Mack an American Clinical Psychologist; fell in love with him for this feat! This acted as the motivation the lad needed to forage into the theories and practices of psychological testing. He spent hours at the university library.
The developmental skill suffered a setback as examinations that were more serious faced the young researcher during his final year. He however picked up and dusted his notebook on the topic during his National Youth Service Corps year at the Department of Psychiatry, University College Hospital Ibadan, 1975 – 1976. He continued to experiment with the idea throughout his three years as a Nigerian Air Force Officer in Kano and later at Kaduna, 1976 –1979.
After earning a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology in 1982 and a Doctorate degree in Psychometrics in 1993, he intensified creative research into how to increase the production of scales, inventories and tests to arrest the dearth of indigenous assessment tools for educational, counselling and medical purposes in Africa. Today after half a century, the same research enthusiast can boast of fifteen well developed, truly validated and internationally standardised psychological tests covering areas in teenage guidance & career counselling, psychological medicine, educational psychology and family counselling/therapy.

KENEZIAN PHILOSOPHY OF LIFE
“A well-known speaker started off his seminar by holding up a $20 bill. In the room of 200, he asked, "Who would like this $20 bill?" Hands started going up. He said, "I am going to give this $20 to one of you but first, let me do this”. He proceeded to crumple the dollar bill up. He then asked, "Who still wants it?" Still the hands were up in the air. "Well," he replied, "what if I do this?" And he dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe. He picked it up, now all crumpled and dirty. "Now who still wants it?" Still the hands went into the air. "My friends, you have all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It was still worth $20. Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled and grounded into the dirt by the decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way. We feel as though we are worthless. But no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never lose your value in God's eyes. To Him, dirty or clean, crumpled or finely creased, you are still priceless to Him.” That is ISM or KENEZIANISM in practice! I hope you cherish these words of wisdom of an Unknown Author! You are welcome to “Let us reason together” as Isaiah, the prophet invited his kinsmen many centuries ago or sit on the fence and die unenlightened by genuine Aristotelian-Kantian combine of deductive and inductive logic, aided by current fund of science knowledge and enquiry to unravel the fables and legends that are now labelled as theology! There is nothing theological about an accumulation of guesswork done by primitive men! They are simply a collection of puerile belief in man-made doctrines, dogmas and rituals that is steadily pushing the humane race to annihilation. Here, I rest my objective of penning this protracted but comprehensive diatribe. Call it heresy, if you like. I do not care a dime. Truth is supreme! Truth is Life, my people declare!

BRIEFS ON THE GENESIS OF KENEZIANISM
The theory and practice of Kenezianism started in 1970, at the end of the civil war when its originator Major Kenechukwu Nzeogwu Mbaezue; BA/ 6532, of the Degema Strike Force, 12th Commando Brigade, Biafra, returned from the war front! He felt shattered by the outcome of the fratricidal debacle of three years. “Why did we lose the war of survival? Should Nigeria the aggressor defeat us the victims of their cruel and premeditated pogroms? Of what use were the prayers to a god that never answered us? Or did our leaders commit unpardonable war crimes or indulge in sacrilegious absurdities? Is the Muslim religion more authentic and reliable than Christianity? If yes, then let us join them and go on pilgrimages to Mecca!” Finding answers to these existential questions drove the young war veteran crazy. He could not comprehend how an unjust war ended in favour of the aggressors. For him it meant that we wasted all our time and youthfulness in the war fronts praying to the God of Christians! He truly deserved veritable explanations! He withdrew from all religious engagement for a period of ten consecutive years, from 1970 to 1980. That gave him enough time to reflect on some existential questions about all he had learnt from the Christian missionaries that moulded his early life in the junior and senior seminaries. There arose the need for him to re-evaluate his belief system, moderate his scrupulous orientation to social life and thereafter, formulate a realistic code of conduct that could guarantee his survival in the conflicting world of the Nigerian society he found himself trapped in! He lived as a war captive for the next 30 years! Within this period, he fully practised the introverted meditative lifestyle of Viktor Frankl or that detached life of a research scientist reminiscent of the great Austrian monk geneticist, MacGregor Mendel. He earned a total of four university degrees that spanned a period of 15 years, with breaks here and there to assist his eight younger brothers and sisters, siblings of the same humble family of a school teacher/catechist! To achieve this, he again joined the armed forces of the nation he lived as an exile, the fallout of which was that he neatly sandwiched a military diploma, pjsc, from the Nigerian Air Force in between the four degrees!
